Determining Internal Field Names

Contents Index

There are three methods you may use to determine the internal name for a field.

Timberline

The Available Fields command in the Timberline Report Designer provides a means to get a printed table of field names for one or more record types.  In order for internal names to be included, you must check the ODBC box.

Quick Aim

The Data Dictionary section of the Quick Aim database reference manual contains a table of information for each record type that includes ODBC information such as internal field names.  The primary advantage of the Quick Aim manual over the Available Fields command is that all printouts are already available and are conveniently indexed by application.  When used in conjunction with Office Connector, many people find the Record Relationships section to be indispensible.

Visual Lookup

The quickest and easiest method for determining one or more internal field names is to use the wizard to select the desired table and then click Next to look at the Internal Name column to the right of the desired field(s).

Written Text

If you want to copy and paste one or more internal field names in Excel, use the Office Connector function wizard.  First select the fields of interest in the wizard and then get the internal field names from the workbook functions it creates.  The following steps illustrate the best method for doing this:
  1. Set the active cell to an unused location
  2. Click the  Find Wizard toolbar button.
  3. Select the desired table and click Next.
  4. Select the desired fields and click Finish.
  5. The internal field name is listed as the second parameter of the TSFind formula.

For Large Tables

Some tables, especially transaction tables, can contain a very large number of records.  In these cases, it may take a significant amount of time for the TSFind function to return a value.  To avoid loading the entire table to get just the field name, you can use the following trick:
  1. Set the active cell to an unused location
  2. Click the  Sum Wizard toolbar button.
  3. Select the desired table and click Next.
  4. Select the desired fields and click Next.
  5. Check the Show advanced view box.
  6. Paste the following text into the large text box: Where 1=0
  7. Click Finish.
  8. The internal field name is listed as the second parameter of the TSSum formula.

Remarks

When determining the internal names of multiple fields, Office Connector will put the additional formulas in adjacent cells to the right of the active cell.  Formulas in those cells will be replaced with the new TSFind or TSSum formulas.
